The Trust makes grants within its main beneficial area of Northumberland and the old Metropolitan Borough of Tyne & Wear (i.e. all NE and SR postcodes and DH4/5). It also welcomes applications from the eastern Scottish Borders.
Grants are made across a wide spectrum for either revenue (including ‘core funding’) or capital expenditure. Applications for research (and research costs within core funding applications) will not normally be supported. The Trustees also generally exclude applications from charities that are not registered within the beneficiary area and where gross incoming resources exceed £1 million as any award would be a very small addition to these resources. Whilst the Trustees will always reserve their right of discretion as to the level of awards given, the maximum awarded is rarely more than 10% of the project costs claimed.
With the exception of core funding, the applicant may not incur expense in relation to the application before the decision of the Trustees has been notified to the applicant – normally within 2 weeks of the meeting.
Grants are made to registered (or statutory) charities; where a charitable organisation is not registered, applications will be considered provided the application is accompanied by a letter from a Local Infrastructure Organisation (LIO, CVA, CVS etc) confirming they will receive any award on behalf of the charitable organisation. Grants are not made to individuals (with the exception of those sponsored by an international development charity – see ‘individuals’ below.)
Trustees’ meetings take place twice a year: usually late January/early February and late June/ July.
Applications should be submitted to the appeals secretary in time to allow for any queries to be resolved by 30th November or 31st May in each year for consideration at the next Trustees’ meeting: early applications are therefore encouraged.

The Trust requires the completion of a standard application form that will be supplied automatically by contacting us – this link will take you to a simple registration form following which an application form will be supplied automatically. Individuals: The Trustees have limited funds available to assist individuals who are permanently resident within the Trust’s defined area of benefit (as above) with small grants for long term international development projects (defined as being in country on charitable work for a minimum of 6 months) where the individual is sponsored by a charity (e.g. Operation Raleigh, Restless Development etc.).
Applications for these funds will only be dealt with by email through appeals@thejoiceytrust.org.uk; they will be considered upon receipt, and will not be subject to the timetable of half-yearly meetings.
The following basic details must be provided in the initial e-mail approach:
- The charity with which you will be working;
- A brief outline of what you will be doing (a longer description may be requested later)
- The dates of your project following which, if appropriate, an application form will be issued.
