North East Forum on Ageing

Sir James Knott Trust

Grants are available to charities in the North East of England to help improve the conditions of people living and working in Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, County Durham, and Hartlepool.

The Trust operates on a rolling grants programme. If you miss a deadline, your application will be considered at the following meeting. The next deadline is 28 August 2023.

Small grants (£1,000 and under) are processed outside of scheduled meetings and have an average turnaround of 6 weeks.

For applications over £10,000, the project will probably require a visit from an assessor or a member of the Trust Staff Team.  It would therefore be advisable to submit applications well before the application deadline date in order to allow for this.

Objectives;

The aim of the Sir James Knott Trust is to help improve the conditions of people living and working in the North East of England.

The Trustees try to follow the wishes and interests of the Trust’s founder where this is compatible with the present day needs of the North East. Charitable works known to have been of particular interest to Sir James are given special consideration, including military and maritime organisations, youth clubs, projects to help the elderly, education and training.

Value Notes;

Grants totalling about £1.8 million a year are made, funded from investment income.

Grants range from £400 to £300,000. It is unusual for the Trust to make grants in excess of £30,000.

Examples of typical grants:

  • £1,000 for a trip or event
  • £5,000 to upgrade a community hall
  • £10,000 towards the core running costs of an organisation.

Match Funding Restrictions:

Applicants are expected to show what other sources of funding have been sought and secured.

Registered charities, community groups and social enterprises that are working in Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, County Durham, and Hartlepool can apply.
