Living in a cold home this winter (Centre for Ageing Better)

As the winter weather truly sets in, more and more older people are living in homes that are too cold. We discuss this in our resource we’ve created following on from the latest meeting of the Good Home Network, a hub for active learning connecting people across England who are exploring ways to improve poor quality homes in their area.

There needs to be more ways for people to keep warm and healthy, especially in the colder months and home improvement services are the first step towards achieving this goal.

Who is most likely to live in homes that are harder to keep warm?

This article explores which groups of people are more likely to live in homes with lower energy efficiency across England and Wales and how that might affect them, using data from Census 2021 and energy performance certificates (EPCs). It finds that households with older adults and those with multiple generations living in them were disproportionately likely to be living in lower energy efficiency homes.
