Grants are available to help social welfare and charitable organisations working to improve the lives of people in the North East of England, particularly those working in the fields of social welfare, youth, disability, the elderly, women, ethnic minorities, education, arts and the environment.

The main areas of funding are in the fields of social welfare, youth, disability, the elderly, women, ethnic minorities, education, arts and the environment.

Match funding is not a stipulated requirement of this scheme.

Not-for-profit organisations based and working in Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Durham, including Hartlepool, can apply.

The following are not eligible for funding:

  • Capital projects that are for major building improvements.
  • Repair of buildings used solely for worship.
  • Animal protection charities.
  • Charities based outside of the geographical area of interest.
  • National charities making general appeals.
  • National charities without a base in the North East of England.
  • Individuals.
  • Medical research.

The funding can be used for running costs, project costs, part salaries and basic equipment under the following headings:

  • Social Welfare – the disadvantaged, people with debt, prisoners, ex-offenders or those at risk of offending and their families, community centres, hospices, homelessness projects.
  • Youth – young people’s potential especially those facing economic and social disadvantage, ex-offenders, anti-social behaviour, youth clubs and groups providing alternative curriculum activities.
  • Disabled or Elderly – engagement with the wider community, support to remain independent and engage in employability, leisure and educational opportunities.
  • Women – victims of domestic violence and their families, support to achieve work and leisure aspirations, groups and activities that promote women’s rights and equality of opportunity.
  • Ethnic Minorities – encourage equal opportunities and integration through projects that involve education, employment and social inclusion.
  • Environment – local community activities that improve the environment and sustainability and social, educational and leisure activities.
  • Education – community-based educational opportunities that improve quality of life for all ages, including those with limited access to education, and support young people’s future aspirations.
  • The Arts – community-based arts projects that bring people together to appreciate, enhance, understand and enjoy music, drama and dance.

How to apply:

The trustees meet quarterly usually in January, April, July and October, and applications need to be received three weeks before the meeting.

The next deadline is 4th July 2024 for consideration at the 25th July 2024 trustee meeting.
